The IceRays fell on Friday night against New Mexico by a score of 4-2. The Rays seemed to have shot themselves in the foot in game one of the series with the plague of the penalty box. The IceRays had a chance to go for a split on Saturday night as they faced off against New Mexico once again.
In the first period, it did not take long for the IceRays to find themselves on the scoreboard with Michael Casey finding the back of the net with a wrap-around goal. The scoring wouldn’t be done in period number one as the captain, Jude Kurtas, snuck one past the left pad of goaltender Owen Parker to give the Rays a 2-0 lead. New Mexico tallied a power play goal to get them back within one at the end of the period.
Period number two brought the same goal total for Corpus Christi as Cole Helm scored his first goal of the season. Jude Kurtas got his second of the weekend to give the Rays a 4-1 lead, which they held for the remainder of the game.
The win for the IceRays was the first road win for the team and also the first win for Stefan Carney. Carney faced 35 shots in the game with only one finding its way by him.
The IceRays return home next weekend to face off against the El Paso Rhinos. On Saturday, it’s Stars and Stripes Night presented by Whataburger. All active military, veterans, and first responders receive free admission into the game with proof of corresponding ID. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 both nights.
