Corpus Christi, TX (March 4th, 2023) – The Corpus Christi IceRays’ next game is tonight, Saturday, March 4th, 2023 at the American Bank Center. Puck drops at 7:05 PM CDT against the Shreveport Mudbugs.
Game Preview
The IceRays will look to avenge the loss last night as they get set to square off against the Mudbugs in the second of two on Hockey ‘N Heels Night at the American Bank Center.
You couldn’t have asked for a better first period from the IceRays last night, who kept the Mudbugs off the score board and recorded a power play goal of their own late in the period. Four unanswered goals, however, from the Mudbugs would propel them to what was eventually a 5-2 victory. The IceRays were outshot 41-18 in the game and will look to generate more opportunities in and around the blue paint this evening.
Tonight will be the 6th meeting of the season between the IceRays and the Mudbugs, with the Mudbugs having taken the first five. The season series will conclude in Shreveport the weekend of April 7th. The IceRays come into tonight with just one win in their last 10 games and an overall record of 10-31-6 for 26 points on the season.
The Mudbugs leapfrogged the Ice Wolves into third place in the South last night after New Mexico fell to Odessa 5-4. Shreveport is now 26-14-2-5 overall with 59 points. If the season ended today, the Mudbugs would face the Lone Star Brahmas in the first round of the playoffs which would be a rematch from last year’s quarterfinals which saw the Brahmas advance in four games.
Players to Watch
IceRays Captain Anthony Cafarelli picked up an assist last night on the man advantage and has been an integral part of the power play unit this year. That snapped a 4-game pointless streak for Cafarelli who recently had a stretch of seven goals in eight games, so it is only a matter of time until he regains his scoring touch. The Middleton, MA native led the team with three shots on goal last night; look for him to be a factor as the IceRays look to even the weekend series here tonight.
Shreveport forward Drake Morse potted two goals in last night’s contest and now has four goals and two assists in five games against the IceRays this season. The Grand Rapids, MI native led the team with eight shots on goal last night and has three points in his last three games. Morse leads the Mudbugs with 38 points this season and is one goal shy of Shreveport Captain Garrett Steele who leads the team with 16 tallies. Look for Morse to contribute once again for the Mudbugs tonight.
