Corpus Christi, TX (Feb 3, 2023) – The Corpus Christi IceRays’ next game is tonight, Friday, February 3rd, 2023 at the American Bank Center. Puck drops at 7:35 PM CDT against the Oklahoma Warriors.
Recap of Last Weekend
The IceRays have turned the page after a tough couple games in Oklahoma City last weekend. The Warriors’ speed and skill was evident from the opening puck drop on Friday until the final horn on Saturday. The IceRays fell by scores of 9-1 and 8-3 to the Warriors on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
The IceRays hung in there against the Warriors in the first period both nights and did a great job clawing their way back after falling behind early. The real story of last weekend was the second period of each game in which the IceRays fell apart, surrendering a combined 11 goals and leading to a goaltending change both nights.
The IceRays were also called for 16 penalties over the weekend series which was uncharacteristic for them as they’ve been one of the least-penalized teams in the league all season. There were undoubtedly some questionable calls from the officials, and it hurt the IceRays who surrendered a few power play goals to the Warriors. The IceRays generated a combined 41 shots on goal last weekend and it will likely take more than that if they want to go toe-to-toe with this top-seeded opponent this weekend.
Players to Watch
Connor Brust continued his hot hand against the Warriors last weekend with a goal on Saturday night, now with two goals in four games against Oklahoma this year. He has two points in his last three games and is second across all IceRays defensemen in terms of points, with 11 in 36 games played. At 6’1”, 195 lbs., Brust is a big body and a physical presence on the IceRays blue line. Look for him to assert himself here this weekend.
Oklahoma forward Drew Sutton was named South Division Star of the Week after helping his team cruise to a weekend sweep of the IceRays last weekend. Sutton put up six points over the two-game set: he had an assist on Friday, and two goals (including the game-winner) and three assists on Saturday. The Hortonville, WI native has seven points in his last three games and is second on the team in points with 40 in 36 games played.
