What is Vision Zero?
Vision Zero is a comprehensive traffic safety strategy aimed at eliminating all traffic-related fatalities and serious, life-changing injuries while improving safe, equitable mobility for everyone. Vision Zero is founded on the belief that no loss of life is acceptable on the road and that crashes are preventable through a systematic approach of action, capital improvements, and education.
The Vision Zero Webb Laredo Comprehensive Safety Action Plan establishes a clear path forward for Webb County and the City of Laredo to achieve Vision Zero. This plan uses the Safe System Approach to determine priorities and actions and features data driven, collaborative, and multi-agency steps to increase traffic safety. The plan promotes an equitable approach to addressing the disproportionate impacts of traffic fatalities and serious injuries on vulnerable populations, including those of color, low income households, older adults, and children.
Cultivating a Culture of Safety in Laredo and Webb County will take commitment from our local leaders and public officials, as well as roadway users and the traveling public. This is not something that other people have to do; it is something all of us must do.
Achieving Vision Zero requires a new approach to transportation safety. The Safe System Approach is the framework that underlies many contemporary safety programs, including Vision Zero efforts and the National Road Safety Strategy. The approach recognizes that safer roads, safer behaviors, safer speeds, vehicle technology, and quick post-crash care together help save lives. This plan serves as a roadmap for integrating Safe System principles into funding and policy decisions. The adopted plan also lays the groundwork for continued collaboration with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to implement recommended strategies, fostering a safer, more equitable transportation network for all.
