This month’s Athlete Spotlight used hard work and determination to become the best athlete he could be. We are proud to announce Marlon Williams from United High School as Laredo Sports Medicine’s Athlete Spotlight for May!

Our month’s athlete is a senior at United High School and is a part of the Longhorn Men’s Basketball team. He draws all his inspiration from his mother, father, his close friends. Marlon Williams began his high school basketball career as a freshman on Junior Varsity. He used this placement as an experience that

“humbled and motivated him to work harder than anyone else, to prove why he should be on varsity.”

He trained vigorously and meticulously to earn his spot on varsity the following year. His efforts were rewarded by earning a spot on the varsity squad his sophomore year. Williams enjoyed his debut, and contributed all the way through the third round of playoffs. Not only did he just secure a spot and contribute, but he also caught the attention of the 29th District (6A). Williams was named ” 2015 Newcomer of the Year”. Alongside Marlon, the Longhorns made it to the third round of playoffs. Throughout these accomplishments, Marlon remained humble and continued to work even harder to become a better athlete each day.

His junior year was his “breakout” year. He became a staple on the Longhorn’s varsity as a starting team captain. The 2016 United Longhorns went throughout the season with undefeated district play. William’s wanted to take the team further than United had ever gone. The team accomplished just that and made it to “Elite Eight” round of playoffs that was held at the University of Texas at San Antonio. This year also produced First Team All-District and First Team All-Region recognition for the stellar athlete.

The athlete’s senior year bloomed with many important acknowledgments that encompass all his hard work to perfect his craft. He earned the KGNS-MVP All-Laredo, the LMT All-City First Team, Co-MVP District 29 (6A), and Border Olympics All-Tournament Team. Not only did his athletic abilities grow throughout his high school career, but his character also did as well.

“Everyone always sees Marlon for the outstanding athlete he is on the court, but often overlook what kind of person he is outside of his talent. He cares so much for all his teammates and makes whatever he is a part of, fun. He has such a good heart and great morals,”

said Archie Ramos, Williams’ varsity coach of three years.

Marlon is a stand-out in all areas he finds himself in, including the classroom. Williams earned Academic All-State for 2016. In his future, Marlon is unsure of what school he wants to attend. He has many collegiate scholarship offers to continue his scholastic and athletic career. Even though he is unsure of what school he will attend, he has decided to major in kinesiology. He has focused on sports for most his life, so stepping into the kinesiology program would be ideal.

Looking back, Marlon recalls how fast his experience passed. When asked what advice he would give to new freshmen and underclassmen, Williams said,

“Listen to the coaches, they know best. Work hard, you never know when it will come to an end and how fast it would pass.”

LSMC and Marlon’s coaches agree that his work ethic and behavior make him a great example for upcoming athletes.

We are so proud of Marlon Williams, and it is our honor to recognize him as Laredo Sports Medicine Clinic’s April 2016 Spotlight Athlete. We are so excited to see what all he will accomplish in his future.
